Dr. Walther Ploos van Amstel is lecturer CityLogistics and Urban Technology at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. His focusing is on sustainable city logistics, urban consolidation centers and horizontal and vertical collaboration. Current urban technology research programs at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences focus on e-mobility, city logistics and urban construction logistics and food in the city.He received a doctorate in Economics in 2002 from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam for his research on logistics organization. From 2002 to 2009 he was professor in logistics at the Netherlands Defence Academy. From 2009 till 2015 he was associate professor at Vrije Universiteit and working for TNO Mobility and Slimstock Professionals.

About Walther Ploos van Amstel

Walther Ploos van Amstel has been a lecturer in City Logistics at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam since 2014. Before that, he was a professor at the Netherlands Defense Academy and affiliated with the Vrije Universiteit.

He has worked for more than 30 years as an organizational consultant in the field of logistics, supply chain management and international distribution. He focuses on logistics innovations, implementing supply chain management, urban logistics, construction logistics and supply chain management.

Walther Ploos van Amstel graduated as a business economist from the Catholic University of Brabant in Tilburg. He has worked for a producer of toilet paper and a producer of detergents and cleaning products….

Working with companies
Thoughtful logistics as part of business strategy is essential for success in the marketplace. The Netherlands as a supply chain country requires companies that are champions in profitably designing value chains. This means application of business scenario planning: continuous thinking in terms of “what if?”. Setting up successful alliances is also essential, as is using ICT to plan and control the value chain.
Ultimately, it’s all about actually introducing innovations into the value chain.

Smart interplay between suppliers, manufacturers, wholesalers, flex partners, retailers, knowledge centers, governments and, of course, logistics service providers determines success or failure. In turn, the logistics industry is a healthy, profitable sector in which it is fun, or fashionably put, ‘sexy’ to work.

In 2002, he completed his doctoral research on the performance of logistics managers at the Free University in Amsterdam. Among other things, he was chairman of the jury of the Dutch Logistics Award of the Logistics Management Association and is a member of the jury of the Jong TLN Awards and the Shopping Awards and as an expert at the IMCC (Inventory Management Competence Center).

He is a regular columnist at, among others: Logistiek.nl, Delaatstemeter and Twinklemagazine. In his scarce free time you can find Walther somewhere in the world as a house DJ.
