About Melchior Wathelet

Melchior Wathelet studied economics at the University of Liege in Belgium and law at Harvard. He has been a visiting professor at the KU Leuven, Liege University, Louisiana State University, the University of Lyon III and the University of Hamburg, where he taught several courses in relation to European law.

In 1977 Wathelet was a representative in the Belgian Chamber for the Centre Démocrate Humaniste from Wallonia, and took in 1980 place in the Wallonian parliament.

In 1985 Wathelet was elected prime minister of the Walloon Region. During the period 1988-1995, he was deputy prime minister of Belgium and Minister of Justice (1988), Economic Affairs (1992) and Defence (1995). After that Wathelet became mayor of Verviers in Belgium for a short period and became later on a judge of the European Court of Justice.

Melchior Wathelet gives legal consultancy and has written many legal books and various chapters.

In 2006, the second part of The Law of the European Union: Common Law and Economic Policies was published, which Melchior Wathelet was the co-editor.
