Dr. Maarten Boudry is a Belgian philosopher who writes and speaks on a wide range of topics, including why the world is not going to the dogs; science and ideology; climate change; the pitfalls of the human mind; abundance and technological innovation; religious fundamentalism; the evolution of AI; and why people believe weird things.
Boudry is the first holder of the Étienne Vermeersch Chair in Critical Thinking at Ghent University (UGent). He delivers academic lectures, keynotes in the private sector, and accessible, interactive talks for general audiences. In addition to dozens of peer-reviewed articles and numerous essays and opinion pieces in Dutch and English, he has written seven trade books for a general readership. His most recent book, The Betrayal of Enlightenment (Het verraad aan de verlichting), published by Prometheus, will appear in English later this year.
Boudry has also published dozens of essays and op-eds in international magazines and newspapers, including The Conversation, Quillette, The Independent, The New York Times (The Stone), Le Point, Die Welt, NRC Handelsblad, de Volkskrant, Human Progress, and De Standaard. He is an inaugural fellow of the Roots of Progress Institute and a monthly columnist for Quillette. His English-language Substack is available at maartenboudry.substack.com.
