Before joining the Center for Leadership & Personal Development at Nyenrode Business Universiteit in 2010, Bas spent almost his entire career working as an entrepreneur. In 1998, he started his first company literally from his living room. The business eventually grew into an organization with multiple branches and several hundred employees on its payroll.
After leading his organizations for 12.5 years, he transferred ownership in 2010 in order to focus on scientific research, writing books, and training and coaching ambitious young students to become future leaders. In his view, these are the new HEROES: Highly Energetic Leading Doers, people who shape their own future with vitality and dedication.
Since then, several other bestselling books written by Bas have been published, such as De Kunst van Duurzaam Presteren, Leidinggeven is omgekeerd opvoeden, and The Devil Inside, which have been released both nationally and internationally.
Through his books, lectures, and seminars, Bas reaches thousands of leaders and professionals every year, inspiring them with energy and motivation to bring themselves and their organizations into a renewed state of flow and engagement—transforming talents into HEROES.
Bas originally comes from Raalte in the region of Salland. He is married, has two sons, and lives in Utrecht.
He studied law (1995) as well as business administration (2007) at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Bas earned his PhD in 2011 at Nyenrode Business Universiteit, served for many years as director of the renowned Executive MBA program, and was appointed Professor in 2020 at the same university.
In 2020, he became only the second Dutch person ever to complete a marathon on all seven continents. In 2023, he was also among the first pilots in the world to receive certification to fly electric aircraft.
