Born in Beni Sidel, in the Moroccan province of Nador, he moved to the Netherlands at the age of sixteen. He settled in The Hague, where he continued his education and earned an engineering degree in electrical engineering with a specialisation in telecommunications. Following his studies, he embarked on a career in journalism, working with renowned Dutch media outlets such as NOS and RTL. This period provided him with invaluable insights into Dutch society’s complexities and laid the groundwork for his future in public service.<\/p>\n
In the early 2000s, Aboutaleb decided to step into public service. He joined the Labour Party (PvdA) and served as an alderman in the city of Amsterdam from 2004 to 2007, focusing on issues like education and youth policy. Recognized for his ability to bridge cultural divides, he was appointed State Secretary for Social Affairs and Employment in the fourth Balkenende cabinet in 2007. During this time, he worked on policies to improve the social integration and economic participation of marginalised communities.<\/p>\n
In 2009, Aboutaleb made history as the first mayor of a major European city with a Moroccan immigrant background. His leadership in Rotterdam has brought him widespread national and international acclaim. In 2021, he was honored with the title of “Best Mayor in the World”. Shortly before stepping down, he was appointed Commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau and received the prestigious Johan van Oldenbarnevelt Medal, celebrating his unwavering dedication to the city and its residents.<\/p>\n
