Césare is a passionate architect, entrepreneur and idealist on a mission to transform current human culture into a more resourceful and sustainable one. In 1996 and starting with the observation that in nature the outputs of one system are not waste, but rather the inputs for another system, Césare architectural graduation project incorporated many themes and concepts now termed ‘sustainable’ and ‘circular design’.
Shortly thereafter, in 1997, he and Jan Jongert founded ‘2012Architecten’ (now ‘Superuse Studios’) with the vision to further develop and realise those themes. Superuse Studios are now recognised pioneers in waste architecture and circular design and remain frontrunners pushing the envelope. Their many realised designs are unique and have become icons of waste design/passive architecture.
From their beginnings investigating and experimenting with the creative re-use potentials of discarded materials for design and architectural purposes Cesare and Jan and their growing team went on to develop concepts and processes such as ‘superuse’, ‘harvest mapping’, ‘recyclicity’ and ‘cyclifying’. The aim being to smooth the pathway for optimal (re)use and repurposing in architecture of not only physical waste materials, but all discarded and under-utilised resource and energy outputs within a design system. They now work with 14 frequently wasted or underutilised resource flows including: materials, food, water, people, heat, sound, knowledge, money, and culture.
From the outset Césare has been integral in all aspects of the work, as idealist, visionary, designer, builder, teacher and managing-director. In 2016 Césare withdrew from management functions to allow more time to fully focus on designing integrated sustainable architecture; architecture in which Césare can apply and integrate the many themes he has been investigating and developing over the last 20 years: re-use/superuse, circular design, lightness, passive energy, passive ventilation, community living and urban agriculture. Although he has applied many of these in separate projects over his first 19 years at Superuse Studios, his intention now is to integrate as many as possible within each given project. Superuse Studio Cesare Peeren is the mobile laboratory of Superuse Studios that is developing the ideas in practice and generally works onsite. In project he is developing knowledge that he is readily sharing on a diversity of platforms.

Césare sincerely believes in what he talks about, he is real, inspiring, and has real life practical experience walking the talk. The audience can feel that. He is able to answer questions, is open to critique and does not mind admitting if things in the work did not turn out as ecological as hoped for. He considers his work to be under constant development, and a way to provide open-source learning opportunities to develop a sustainable society.
Superuse has been the frontrunner in circular design, from the start in 1997 they have been designing circular, in 2021 they received the oeuvre award specifically for being an important inspiration for dutch architects to build with waste materials.

Cyclifiers, harvest map, donorbuildings, are all new words used and have been coined by superuse, these are the tools that enable the circular economy. The talk describes the various principles and tools and how they were applied and resulted in succesfull projects with between 60 and 90% waste materials used built for standard budgets and with very little environmental impact.

This container word is made practical in Superuse ‘s work. All aspects of sustainabilty are integrated in the most recent realised projects; existing buildings reused, upgraded with local waste and biobased materials. In the transformation also improving the energy performance so no energy is needed from the grid.
Realised projects (Boschgaard, Green House, Villa Maggiore, Césare’s personal home) and projects under construction (Eco-village: Land van Aine, landgoed in Normandie) are used to describe Césare’s integrated approach. How living in communities and changing our lifestyle can be key to regenerating the natural world and our relationship with it and eachother.
