About Roger Crowley

Roger Crowley is a Cambridge graduate, historian and writer with a life-long interest in the history of the Mediterranean and its surrounding areas – particularly that of Turkey, Greece and Venice, the Ottoman and Byzantine empires and relations between Islam and Christianity. He has lived and worked in Turkey and travelled widely throughout the area. He is the author of three books on the subject: Constantinople: The Last Great Siege (US title 1453) (2005), Empires of the Sea (2008) – a New York Times bestseller – and City of Fortune: How Venice Won and Lost a Naval Empire (2011).

He has talked about both the history of the region and its modern relevance in lectures, seminars and broadcasts to a wide range of audiences. These include NATO and US Army Command in Europe, the Center for Naval Analyses in Washington, the Hay Festival, BBC radio, and TV documentaries on the clash of civilizations in the Mediterranean world. He writes articles and reviews for a range of newspapers and periodicals.
