Maarten van Rossem completed grammar school B in Wageningen after elementary school. He then studied history in Utrecht, after which he left for a stay at the ‘Institut für Europäische Geschichte’ in Mainz, Germany. From 1971, he was a scientific collaborator at the ‘Institute of History’ at Utrecht University.
Van Rossem obtained his doctorate in 1983 with the thesis: ‘The radical temperament. The dual political conversion of a generation of American intellectuals (1934-1953)’. Van Rossem was appointed Extraordinary Professor in November 1997 with the teaching assignment ‘Dutch culture in an international context’. He regularly comments on political and cultural issues for radio and television.
The ‘Historisch Nieuwsblad’ elected Van Rossem ‘historian of the year 2003’ because he ‘has guided the Dutch through this unpleasant year of war with a great deal of humor and historical responsibility’.
Van Rossem is also no stranger to television. He can often be seen on ‘Pauw & Witteman’ and ‘De Wereld Draait Door’. In 2012, Van Rossem made a documentary about the American presidency entitled: ‘Van Rossem For President’. He is also the sole jury member of the NCRV quiz “De Slimste Mens” (The Smartest Human). Furthermore, Van Rossem has his own magazine “Maarten!”. His magazine presents the theater tour “According to Maarten!” in 2014.
Since 2015, Maarten van Rossem has had a successful theater tour ‘Maarten van Rossem Theaterlezing’ on current social issues and political questions in cooperation with Speakers Academy. From October 2022 he will be back in Dutch theaters.
