About Harry Mayer

Mr. drs. Harry Mayer was born in Haarlem. He is married to Marie Louise Henriëtte Defoer. They have two children. At the University of Amsterdam he graduated in law (1970) and history (1984).

During his career he worked as a bookseller and assistant professor at the University of Amsterdam. Harry Mayer occupied several posts within the Ministry of Justice, a.o. as Head Legal Affairs and as Public Prosecutor at the Court of Justice in The Hague.

Since 2004 he is Director Civil Aviation Security for the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism.

As a director he is responsible for (international) policy concerning the security of civil aviation.

In several countries (U.S.A., Japan, Israel) he has given speeches on the subject civil aviation security with special areas of interest:

  • Security of passengers, hand and hold luggage.
  • Security of airports.
  • Training and education of security personnel.
  • Investigation of new security concepts and processes.
  • Giving directives to the Royal Military Police.
  • Determination of the threat.
  • Cooperation with other countries.
  • Execution of security investigations concerning people who are working in vital parts of the society.
  • Technology for security civil aviation.
  • Future of terrorism and what to do against it.

    • Harry is a member of the Advisory Board of the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam and member of the Board of the Dutch Society for the Arts of Books and Printing.

    Fascinating things for him are history, (Russian) literature, classical and modern jazz music, painting and graphic arts, bird watching, tennis and skiing.
